Welcome to the new 'project'.........
I have been into VW's for years (20 plus years now!!) and have restored a number of cars. However, although I had always liked the look of Karmann Ghia’s, especially early ones, I had never owned one due to the heavy price tag these came with.
Therefore, when a friend of mine brought a job lot old VW that were found at a collector’s house (which including this Ghia which he offered to me for a very good price) I decided the dream of owning a Ghia should became a reality!! I especially liked this car as it was a cross over year car, the same as my 59 Ragtop Beetle (See 'Dude's Beetle' website), and there is just something cool about crossover car!
I’m very aware that the car is in a bad state (some would say terminal!), as it had been dumped in a garden for about 15 years unfortunately with all the windows down/ or smashed, but my past restorations (See 'Dude's Beetle' and 'Nat’s Bus') gave me a perhaps false sense of confidence that that I could save this one!!
I'm still not exactly sure what I’m doing with the car. The body of the car, as well was everything that was bolted to it is very heavily pitted with rust or tarnished. One thought is to fully detail the inside of the car as well as the chassis leaving the body externally as it is (It not going to be a ‘patina’ car, it's way past that!!). Another is to fully paint and detail the car in a Cal Look style (a big influence on me!). I’m really not sure at the moment which way I want to go.
At present body wise I'm going to repair anything that needs repairing, and match the rust back in. In relation to the parts that come of it, these will be refurbished to a good standard, but where they are heavily pitted or tarnished, I will keep this as a nod to the state that the car was originally in.
Please feel free to look around the website, and I hope you enjoy my restoration.
